How SILENT HILL: Townfall is structured and how to progress: parts, puzzle design, save points, the CRTV loop, and what to prioritize before the difficulty climbs.

This hub explains how SILENT HILL: Townfall is put together and how to think about progressing through it — then hands you off to the part-by-part walkthrough. No story spoilers beyond the opening setup.

What kind of game Townfall is

Townfall is a first-person survival horror built on three interlocking loops:

  1. Explore the fog town. Read documents, open drawers, power up dead electronics, and follow the CRTV's signals toward the next location. The town is dense but directed — signals on the CRTV "vaguely suggest the next direction and/or location to head toward," so when you feel lost, tune first, walk second.
  2. Survive what hunts you. Some enemies can be fought with planks and firearms; others must be evaded entirely. Detection is usually survivable if you break line of sight fast — hiding spots like cabinets, closets and lockers are scattered through the dense areas.
  3. Solve narrative puzzles. Screen Burn builds puzzles that are story beats: codes assembled from calendar vignettes, ring-dial locks keyed to dates, power routed through buildings. Expect to write things down.

How the story is structured

The game advances through named parts — the opening chapter is Part 1: The Arrival — each blending town exploration, set-piece stealth, and a major puzzle chain, then bookending with a story scene. Within a part, progression is mostly linear with short optional detours for documents and supplies. The CRTV is the compass: its stored signals replay fragments that point at where to go next.

  • Endings: like previous Silent Hill entries, Townfall carries a handful of endings — IGN's coverage confirms multiple endings to obtain — so your behavior in key moments matters beyond a single run.
  • Length: this is a focused, chaptered horror game rather than an open world — expect a compact campaign designed around a clean single-thread playthrough, with replay value in the endings.

The systems you must understand early

  • The CRTV is everything. You tune it (align the tuning bar, then time the Store Signal input) to reveal vignettes: story fragments, object highlights, and — critically — monster positions you cannot see with your own eyes. Master it in the first hour and the rest of the game changes. Full details in the CRTV guide.
  • Saving happens at telephone booths. Dial 100 from a phone booth to save. The game teaches this in Part 1 — build the habit of saving whenever you pass a booth.
  • Stealth is a first-class verb. Crouch behind fences, signs and parked cars; lean with R1 and the right stick to peek; slip into hiding places when a route is blocked. The catch: if an enemy watches you climb in, they will drag you out. See the stealth and hiding guide.
  • Combat is a last resort. Melee weapons are everyday objects with weight and durability feel; firearms aim with optional motion controls. Ammunition and supplies are scarce — our combat and survival guide covers the economy.
  • The map makes you vulnerable. Pressing the map button holds it up in front of your face — check it indoors or behind cover, never mid-street.

A progression checklist for new players

  1. Play with headphones. The 3D audio mix is a gameplay system, not a luxury — enemy positioning is audible.
  2. Tune the CRTV at every new area. Stored signals double as navigation and threat radar.
  3. Save at every phone booth (100). Difficulty spikes are real, per the review consensus.
  4. Loot systematically. Drawers, bathroom cabinets, cash registers and counters hold flashlights, batteries, gauze, documents and weapons. Documents matter — several puzzles are solved with information they contain.
  5. Read before you burn resources. Power cards, keys and codes are usually found, not bought — check notes before backtracking across town.
